Does this even qualify as a legitimate outfit post? i used photobooth (again) and i didn't even put much thought into it. besides, it's all going to get covered up (with a button up and leggings) for work. everyone is enjoying the sun while i'll be making photocopies and get non fat milk from the cafe. midterms are over but that still doesn't mean a busy weekend full to the belly with presentations, memorizations, and readings. did i mention i lost my spotty dotty umbrella that i've had for over a decade? and it didn't even rain yesterday! anyways, i got paid yesterday (90% straight to tuition!) and will be taking a nice shopping trip with some friends this evening.

Wish i had to time to whip out my camera and do an actual post. hell... i haven't even seen the alexander mcqueen video because i am so damn busy (my soul is dying in anticipation). alas, i am in the middle of midterms, which i find a lot more annoying than finals. this weekend... i'm predicting that a can or two of monster energy drinks will be opened and a mad rant and/or rampage will ensue.

I love mondays. only one late afternoon class. it's like a sunday. i check my mail, go to the gym, add a flavored shot to my iced espresso and soy milk. today it's roasted marshmallow. it's really good. trying to write a murder mystery for my fiction class. keyword: trying. lazy today. obviously. so pictures were taken with photo booth.

did some retail therapy on saturday with michael and beatrice. beatrice found the perfect boots in the kids section of zara while michael and i ran around trying on little boy blazers. comforted by the fact my paycheck will arrive this week, even though it will all go straight to my tuition. whatever. just as long as i make dean's list again.

So new york's fashion week came and went. i believe london is well on it's way right now. i am going to make this short and sweet as i have a little paper to write for my women's studies class. so how is the industry of fashion going now that more people have their eyes on their wallets rather on those hot cute pumps? well, the eyes are still on those pumps, just the wallet is a little bit of a nagger, wouldn't you agree?

so i've reviewed the collections, ignored the industry critics, and mulled over my own opinions. so here is the gist of it: american sportswear mania. keep it basic. keep it classic. keep it sweet. everything i feel in love with (and not) always brought it back to that idea of having the ideal, high quality, basic wardrobe. hell, even alexander wang's collection, which i liked even less than last season's, had models walking down the runway on the foundations of american sportswear.

new york also made me realize one big thing: time to bulk up my wardrobe with the classics. well, the nouveau classics. as much as i like the quirky, odd, youthfulness of certain clothes and aesthetics, it is something i cannot afford to throw my hard earn pennies at. the older i've become, the more frustrated i am with the constant change of trends. the hasty dropping and picking of the other. it makes my head hurt and spin!

i want to hone in on the classics and basics and spin them into my own style. its something i think i've been subconsciously making my way towards for the last two years. but i guess it took college, a recession, and a parade of trench coats, stripes and liberty prints to finally go, "oh... yeah... damn."

so tell me new york, what do I need for spring?

ah so that's the ten looks from new york i'll be aspiring for now as well as next spring. once london, milan, and paris are up, i'll be printing each outfit out and posting them on my wall, to remind me not to stray and succumb to buying some ridiculous piece that i can probably make my self (ie: the dvf gold headbands. DIY alert!). most of these outfits are tailored more to my taste and wardrobe needs. the collections they respectively belong in i want stuffed into my closet right now.

someone is playing the bagpipes. i've spent the day playing jenga and i'm tired for reasons unknown to me. i went shopping yesterday with a $40 budget. i spent $65. a navy blue cotton and mesh dress, a navy blue and cream stripe sweater, a navy blue full pleated mini skirt, pink floral tights, a heavy silver floral necklace, mesh bra, gold sparkle nail polish... lots of blue, mesh, and floral.

i hate that i went over my $40.

It's only wednesday and i want to crawl into a rock. which is easy. because my hermit shack of a dorm secludes me from everyone and makes socializing with friends rather different and almost tiring. long classes and even longer work hours. my boss didn't approve of my outfit from yesterday. it wasn't "conservative" enough. a phrase ivan couldn't help but fall into a heap of giggles every time he saw me yesterday. i spent two hours agonizing over what to wear. and i remember this dress.

my head hurts from all my classes and from learning the ropes at work. i need to pick up my old essays from my former lit professor. my body is tired from walking around. i have too many things to get from home. clothes for work. cleaning supplies. and those damn mirrors. and then i find out i do not have two textbooks that i have to a) write a essay on by next week and b) read a 100 pages by wednesday. oh and then my boss over scheduled and now i am not working tomorrow morning. there goes my an extra $20. that's like... sixteen espresso shots.

Move-In day today. i feel a lot more prepared than freshman year. but i have a lot more stuff to move in. did my clothes double or am i just bringing more stuff than last time? because now i have a three foot tall, one foot deep suitcase that is full, a circle hamper with a two foot diameter filled to the top with clothes, a bin of shoes, a bin of bags, a bin of books, and well.... a ton of other things... i'm not looking forward to moving things from the car to the fourth floor. so not.

damn walmart. making me miss the ease of having a first floor dorm. hell... my dorm room to be exact. that's the damn tree that had all of the freakin squirrels in it. the one that would make odd noises right before lindsey and i fell asleep and would make us go, "wtf....". tricky walmart making me think that's not my hall but the opposite one because the soda vending machine is at the end of the hall.... but i see jenny the DA's door right next to it! can't fool me you damn soul sucking, human rights shitting corp!!!!

oh and the wildfire a good half an hour south of my school? not looking forward to the heat and ash.

If things went my way, i'd have enough loose change to buy fyf tickets, parents who understood what getting into parsons meant to me, and cardigan and wool tights weather when i go back to school next week. alas, my campus sits near the beach in southern california, i'm clearly not in new york, and not even my checking account could handle any concerts for the next four months. and i wouldn't be stuck in such a rut about what i'll be wearing next week. so i dreamt about the dream closet. and i took time from my mad rush of packing my whole closet (i finished actually... one extra large suitcase, 2 large bins, and a large hamper... and thats not even my "winter" clothes) to salivate and dream. not all of us can be rumi or jane.

sorry it's been some time since i've posted, but this week has been a mad rush of goodbyes to friends leaving for the east coast and getting ready for my second year of dorm life. i finally bought a big enough day planner to plan out my life hour by hour, saw (500) days again (the director must really really love french cinema), and visited my favorite vintage store in fullerton, out of vogue, while dreaming of my future home filled from the floor to the ceiling with 1940s/1960s decor and furniture. oh and get dorm stuff like shampoo, printer ink, and make DIY decor stuff like a garland i plan to hang made out of pages of my brother's old french dictionary and construction paper. fun.

and before i forget, i scored a pair of really cute summer heels at buffalo exchange for $15/sold a few items for them. funny how i find them at the END of my summer break.

okay, i'm off to do more tedious last minute errands. bah. but i got a letter from marisa yesterday. love the girl. i need to send her one back. which reminds, i'll reply to all the lovely comments later today when i'm done running around like a headless chicken.

I love how michael stipe is one of those people that can some how reach into every crevices of my mind. his voice, lyrics, and style have all affected and influenced me to some extent in the last few years. i've tried numerous times in the past to do my best "amish-nouvelle" look. i remember watching everybody hurts back in the early days of youtube and ever since then i either leave my shirts loosely unbutton (a la "boyfriend fit") or button every single damn one because when i wanted to feel dapper and dandy like stipe, thats what i did. ironically. the damn bastard. i want to hug him.

Lately, i've been bored by graphic tees. they bring back bad memories from my tween years and images of the hypebeast kids from my high school screen printing class and family reunions. so normally, i turn a blind eye. but thank the lord for christopher sauve. i loved the original shirts that pushed him into the spotlight ("i die. bananas") and this print.... love it. and yes. i die. i might save up and buy it (though that would bring me to an ugly cross road... concert tickets? tee shirt?). or i might be cheap and make my own version via sneaking into my high school's screen printing studio and silk screen print my own with my bare hands . the holy mother + "mama mary disapproves". hey, my former teacher would approve. he did love my final project, a canvas tote bag with the irritated shaved cat .

various friend bonding that is rather noteworthy. went to LA last sunday with chris and ariel. we got lost in a city we vicariously lived in through our parents and ate some delicious food at my impromptu surprise belated "proper" birthday dinner. chris and i ended up matching by accident, wearing the same prints but in reverse clothing articles and colors. look below to see the proof.

i was wearing a blue striped zara tunic as a dress, a target scarf, & an old cardigan from my childhood

and then on friday, the three of us slaved over the stove for a fabulous 50s themed dinner for some of our friends from our high school days. we toasted with shirley temples to finally being in the same room together after more than a year and for future gatherings.

well, it seems like everybody and their mother wants to see an outfit. so here it is. not going to be able to wear it out.why? well it goes kinda like this:

"hey mom, i'm going to the grocery store to buy red onions!" she came into the hallway, took a look at me and then it was as if i was 12 years old, wearing all black, spikes, chains, anarchy patches, black nail polish, and walking around with a book about kurt cobain and a walkman playing system of a down.

so i huffed and i puffed and i... changed out of this. sad that this may or may not see the light of day for a while. maybe i might toss this whole thing on for the first day of fall classes. maybe.

so here's another story:

the necklace is from forever 21 and the other day the chain fell off and reaffirmed my thoughts on forever 21 quality. but i still love love this probably overly mass-produced piece of jewelry because it goes is everything and anything... i think. well so far it hasn't failed me yet (apart of the chain incident). the jacket thing is actually the top part of one of my mom's old party dresses from the 80s. i cleared the cutting with her and then proceeded to work on it while tannia worked on the sleeves of the dress. the rest of the mauled dress... no idea what i am going to do with it... make it into another dress? pillows for my dorm? a necklace? hmm anyways rest of the outfit:

the dress is from aa, the shoes from LA fashion district, socks from urban outfitters, and the clutch is marc jacobs.

finally went out. a few friends from high school and i went to the claremont village for a little hooray for my birthday. everything we need was decided my a coin toss. lunch or coffee? we went to my favorite bakery for coffee and pastries. lunch or shopping? visited rhino records, some antique stores, bookstores, and the sickening cute and amazing raku. had lunch at a french cafe and made every and any attempt to escape the dry heat. i love my friends. some go back as far as middle school, some from when i was 15. after all these years, they still keep can stand me and all my wacky bullshit.

I am going to be honest. i was one of those kids who sincerely believed that on my birthday, an owl would swoop down and deliver a letter with a red wax seal. every birthday throughout middle school, and kinda/sorta high school, every july 16th i woke up and jokingly-semi-seriously thought, "hmmm maybe."

well, clearly, that never happened. actually, in 2005 something quite magical did occur on my birthday. it wasn't a letter. no, it was the 6th book. when the clock hit midnight, my friends surrounded me at the bookstore and yelled, "happy birthday, leila!"

quite magical. oh my "pre-leila-grace" days. or "the dark ages" as marisa and i have dubbed them.

and about 24 hours ago, i was sitting in a movie theatre, wired on a double shot espresso and maybe a little bit of magic. sure i threw a fit worthy of a angry drunk when the twilight trailer came on (do not get me started...), and sure i giggled like an idiot when daniel was on screen (ahaha "gayface"), and yeah ariel had to poke me in the knee with her homemade wand every time rabid fan syndrome befell me and i went "omg draco looks like he is wearing prada and dior homme!". ah what can i say.

lord, i'm a nerd. but last night, there was no shame. and in a little over an hour's time, my birthday will roll in. all i want is an iced double shot, a little bit of solitude, and a dash of silence on the side.

Sometimes i feel like i never leave the house during the summer. like i wake up, check email, respond to judy, read the cut, watch tv, text chris, and go to sleep. and then i have burst of activity graciously reminding me that there is a social life, which then materializes here, as if validating that it all happened.

so on thursday, what i thought was going to be a "lets make invitations for our 50s dinner party" evening turned into a laugh fest of curry, the cobra commander, and claremont. alliteration. how i love you. while waiting for ariel, i took those pictures above. damn you photobooth. the evening fell into place when chris came over (looking like he came back from the hamptons), and we all went for indian food. over naan, rice, curry, and samosas, we came to a a general understanding: i am a little bit obsessed with joesph gordon-levitt. seriously guys, there will be a massive post about joe (as i have come to call him) in the very near future.

funny how last summer was matthew grey-gubler, now joe. and they are both in 500 days of summer. and they both have hyphenated last names.

anyways. after dinner we went to claremont village via awkwardly empty side streets because of certain mishaps. "this has all the makings of a death by ax murder". but hey, at least we saw a ton of pomona... and upland... and i think la verne. aka: more of the inland empire than we had liked to see.

my favorite bakery turned out to be closed for the day, but rhino records was opened and look what i found:

i did scan through it. didn't feel like forking over $4 for stuff i already knew... but i held on to that book till closing. after some ice cream, we jetted back home. i went to sleep and woke up. found myself having breakfast at my favorite LA institution ever: the pantry. mmm pancakes... so... good. and while little sister had an eye check up, older sister and i strolled around farmer's market and the grove. with a double espresso in hand, i found a XL tank that i shall wear as a dress on my birthday later next week for less than $3 at the gap. tried on marc by mj jeans at barney's. they were too long and looked awkward when i rolled them up. then, with little sister and her dilated eyes, we went to melrose where i spent a grand total of $13 at urban. yay more sales! couldn't stay too long. the parentals hate melrose. all the tats and stuff. go fig.

Couture week came and went (see you in january!). valentino and saab created collections that, dare i say, are night and day (black and white, get it?! har har). lacroix did his final couture bow :'(. givency stopped my heart multiple times (i'm getting heart palpitations just thinking about it). and chanel create a couture collection that didn't look like anna wintour threw up all over it and actually makes me forgive them for those horrid flats from spring couture 2008. i guess you can say the above is my top five in no particular order.

sometimes i wish i could post the conversations i have with my friend andrew. seriously, i have to vicariously live through the man. while i'm stuck in inland empire suburban hell, he gets to frolic around beverly hills (lucky bastard move there so he could live off campus at ucla). he updates me on the barneys on rodeo drive's window display from time to time (ie: "omg! rodarte! its so amazing!"). currently, we are lamenting over the lack of lacroix matador jackets on the streets of fashion capitals, madonna as LV's girl, who has the burberry look, a conversation sparked by emma watson (he says lekeline stange, i say amadan laine), how much we miss gemma ward, as well as the atrocity that is matching, cookie cutter hair a la armani prive's most recent couture show. it's tons of fun.

but i'm dead bored. kinda sorta busy today, apparently enough that i have to push my playdate with tannia to monday (horror movies + asian junk food!). tomorrow little sis has a doctor's appointment, which means beverly hills/LA/that general area, and so i'll be forcing my family down to scoops and getting my month long craving of deliriously crazy ice cream flavors.

finally! haute couture is back for another season. i don't know about you all, but i'm defiantly on edge, waiting to see what's going on at lacroix. more to write on later, as the rest of this week occurs. trying to recuperate from a seriously annoying allergic reaction some acne medication. grrr.

so while i fall asleep with the office playing on the background (thanks tree) and the latest GQ issue in my arms (thanks chris), let couture week rage on and enjoy summer. fall is just around the corner. oh wait, i live in southern california. the summer season doesn't let go till halloween. ah fall semester, is more of the term. oh new pair of wedged sandals, you just have to wait. i have textbooks to buy.

but a girl can dream right? besides textbooks, this is what i hope to also bring back to campus. i know it's only july, but one can never be too prepared? being bedridden for a whole week leaves a lot of online shopping, so i fill a lot of digital shopping baskets while i'm not knocked out on medication or doing internship work.

three: last spring i went through a tights phase (from lace, to red, to the AA's two tone), now it's scarves (i think nordstrom or gap?). even chris knows its a problem.

six: i'll be using the "but mom, i need more work clothes, i'm handing checks out to priests and babysitting classes!" excuse so i could horde all the liberty and gingham button ups i want. and a couple of plain cotton tops too. my little sis has taken a ton of my good ones, which left me with very little during last school year (sharing a closet has it's limitations, especially while living in a dorm). tops from j crew + steven alan.

it's finally summer, though i will miss the june gloom. yeah and how does the change of weather greet me? with a fever. so not only do i feel hot because of the heat, i also get to burn from the inside out. i've been sluggishly lying around the house. yesterday, i blankly watched a morning marathon of platinum weddings on WE TV. those weddings are so tacky, i felt a little vomit come up every time a freakin bride said, "omg i love it, it's so bling!" i refuse to have any form of gawdy rhinestones at my wedding. hell, even for my ring, i want something small and simple, not some stone that screams, "he isn't good in bed but he has a good bank account". to make my self feel better, i went on my favorite wedding blogs. here are just some of my favorite weddings. seriously, some of the best DIY, homemade, vintage country esque, and/or etsy weddings ever. most of these weddings i have saved up on my laptop for future references, and not just for my dream wedding, for things in general. parties, foods, home decor, ect.

it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to do outfit posts. it probably has to do with the fact that the last time i left my house it was for church on sunday morning, and before that it was church on sunday morning. in honor of a new week, for the last whatever days have passed, i've been wearing one of my dad's old wife beater tanks (is that what they are called? what a horrible name), and a red hoodie that has a cartoon monkey and stars. i went on the cut this morning and saw the new cdg black collection. i pretended in my head that i was wearing one the blazers, wool black leggings a thin loose black tee, black boots, and a pink bra underneath it all.

to make the hours pass (though i can no longer tell if the days are fast or slow), i've immersed myself in my two favorite past times: writing and listening to radiohead. in the mornings, i lay on my side and listen to live performances of my favorite songs and dream of disconnecting thoughts. afternoons, i'm on the floor, hunched over my lap top, jumping from one document to another. at nights, i listen to radiohead interviews with ghost hunters muted on the tv.

at three in the morning, i am up reading old diary entries from the kid a/ amnesiac recording session and newsletters that date as far as "pop is dead". i think of the rick owens sneakers thom wore during the grammy performance. i think of possible tattoo ideas:

i've always associated fashion with art, expression, and adrenaline. lately, those words are followed with guilt, cold, blind, and lies. i could change my jeans from high to low, dresses from snug to loose, and take off bracelets and put on a jacket. but no matter what, i would never be comfortable in my own skin.

when i am with others, it is like i am clothed. i am funny. witty. fiery. by myself, even my own hands feel unfamiliar.
